The boys finish their season on a high note this last weekend at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Denver with a decisive win over the Arizona Runners.
The Penguins’ first day of tournament play included a game out against the Colorado Junior Eagles. Although the boys came out firing, they were not able to break through against the Eagles goaltending. Game 2, the boys met up with the Arizona Runners and had to overcome a two goal deficit in the 3rd period to tie it up in the end. Game 3 saw the Pens play a solid top to bottom game, outshooting the Colorado Selects 34-14 and shutting them out 3-0, apparently having fully acclimated to the altitude change.
The Arizona Runners are a known opponent to this team, having come from behind to win against them in Chicago while at the Nike Bauer Invitational. The boys had to come from behind in Chicago and the first game in Denver, and were not going to make the same mistake again. The first period was evenly played with a Penguins goal scored by Ryo Yoshida. The boys pushed hard in the 2nd and took control of the game with goals scored by Evan Layton, Tucker Chapman and Dalton Caesar and outshooting the opponent 13-5. The final period put the nail in the coffin, with the team’s top scorer, Ethan Smith, netting the final two goals. The final was 6-0 – a clear win for the team!
