The Dallas Penguin Mite Majors won the Mite Division of the 2008 Texas Shootout Tournament with a convincing seven to one victory over a gritty Junior Brahmas team on Labor Day. Halfway through the opening period, the young Mites got on the board and never retreated outshooting their opponents twenty one to seven. The scoring effort was supported by solid checking and dominant defensive play. The team went 4-0 over the weekend. The Penguins fielded three of the top four scoring leaders for the tournament, including the tournament scoring champion who led in goals (11), assists (7), and total points (18) over the four games. Great contributions were made by all players including the four Mite Minor age players (of 2001 birth year). The young 2001’s, playing in their first travel hockey game and playing together the majority of the time on the same offense line tallied 25% of the team’s offensive attack. The young 2001’s got the game winners in two of the four contests. During a testy shootout on Sunday afternoon that went six players deep, it was a 2001 who scored the game winner to enable the Penguin Mites to advance to the final. It was a truly impressive team performance overall, the Penguins outshot their opponents 119-28 and outscored them 45-6. Way to go Penguin Mites!
