The Dallas Penguins U16 AA team traveled to the Warrior AAA Invitational tournament the weekend of Oct. 16-18 and performed admirably.

The team started the weekend on Friday morning with their first game against the USA Eagles and came out fast scoring the first 6 goals in route to a 7-1 victory. Goals were scored by Kyle Hogue, Connor Nehls, and Brendan Skinner and 2 goals each by Logan High and Ethan Harrison.

That evening the Michigan Northstars were next on the schedule and again the Penguins came out on top by a score of 3-1 with goals by Will Greenman, Adam Doucette and Jacob Plattner. That night the team celebrated by taking in a Redwings game at the soon to be knocked down Joe Louis Arena.

Saturday morning the boys had game 3 of the round robin vs. the Mississauga Jets, the #10 Canadian team that came out to play. The Penguins held their own in a hard fought 2-1 loss. The only goal of the game came from Hank Schurig.

Then the waiting to see where the team would end up as the tournament would split the teams with the top 8 (of 28) playing in the “Championship” Quarter finals, the second 8 playing in the “Consolation” Quarter finals and the remaining 12 teams would get a consolation game. The Penguins just missed the 8th spot by a .12 margin in goal differential and became the 1st seed in the “Consolation” bracket.

The Quarter final game was against the Tampa Bay Scorpions (reigning AA National Champions and ranked #21) and against all odds the Penguins came out firing on all cylinders and handed the Scorpions a 4-2 loss with goals from Caden Halverson, Will Greenman, Logan High and Jacob Plattner.

The quarter final win moved the Penguins on to play a semi final vs. the West Dundee Maple Leafs (#9 ranked AA team) and the Penguins were ready. The boys completely swamped the Leafs in a 4-1 win with Andrew Warhoftig garnering his first 2 goals of the year and Connor Nehls adding one and a last minute goal by Ace Doucette finished off the scoring.

Now Parents and Coaches were scrambling to change flights as many didn’t expect to be playing Sunday afternoon. A few were unable to stay, so with the injuries and missing players the Penguins had to get ready to play the Colorado Thunderbirds AAA with 6 players out.

The boys had a good meal and were ready to go when the puck dropped. They battled for most of the game with no scoring when the first penalty came vs. the Thunderbirds with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. The penguins set up the power play and executed to perfection with a goal by Caden Halverson coming from a great pass by Logan High. The boys held the lead until the Thunderbirds pulled their goalie and managed a game tying goal at the :43 second mark. Then the game went thru a 5 minute overtime which was followed by a 10 player shootout, and that tenth man was Kyle Hogue who buried the puck in the net for the game winner ending a strong showing by the Penguins.

Additionally, the teams two goalies were outstanding throughout the weekend, Evan Williams and Reid Robertson went a combined 5-1 allowing a total of only 6 goals in 5 games in route to the Championship game where Evan stood on his head to hold the Thunderbirds to 1 last minute goal with 6 skaters on the ice as they'd pulled their goalie.
